Worcester, Mass. – February 22, 2025 – The Springfield College men's swimming and diving team broke three school records and earned three podium spots on the third day of the 2025 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships on Saturday evening at WPI.
Through three days of competition, Springfield sits in fourth place with 496.5 points. Ahead of Springfield is MIT (967), Coast Guard (729) and Babson (508).
Individually,
Jonathan Chan (Hong Kong) re-broke his own school record from earlier this year twice in the 100-fly as he posted a 49.09 during prelims and then finished fourth in the championship final with a 49.06. He originally broke the record at the Gompei Invite also at WPI with a 49.14.
Luke Zonghetti (Tolland, Conn.)finished 11th overall with a spot in the consolation finals of the 100-fly tonight as well.
Matthew Kenvin (Boca Raton, Fla.) also broke the school record in the 100-breast as he earned a second place finish and a silver medal with a time of 55.27. Kenvin originally broke the record at the Gompei Invite earlier with a 56.31.
Matt Quinney (Belchertown, Mass.) competed side by side with Kenvin in the championship final as he clocked a 55.80 for fifth place in the event.
The Pride ended the night with its third record as the 200-medley relay quartet of Quinney, Kenvin, Chan and
Dan Backlund (Duxbury, Mass.) produced a runner-up finish with a time of 1:30.96 for a silver medal. Backlund went on to place tenth in the 200-free championship final in 1:42.68.
Springfield's final podium placement came from
Christian Butler (North Haven, Conn.) who earned his second medal of the weekend as tonight he took second on the 1-meter board with a score of 492.50 just three points behind Truman Remenicky of MIT, who claimed gold.
Gerold Gutierrez (Milford, Conn.),
Brian Douglass (Wilbraham, Mass.) and
Jon Sherlock (West Chester, Pa.) represented Springfield in the consolation finals of the 400-IM as Gutierrez finished 15th (4:18.31), Douglass took 16th (4:18.65) and Sherlock took 19th (4:27.65).
Dawson Milligan (Forestdale, Mass.) took tenth overall in the championship final of the 100-back with a time of 52.84, while
Jordon McMillan (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago) placed 12th in the consolation final in 53.00.
