Cambridge, Mass. – February 20, 2026 – The Springfield College men's swimming and diving finished competition on the second day of the 2026 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships inside the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center Pool on Saturday.
In the team standings, Springfield sits in sixth place with 215 points. MIT leads the pack with 524.5 points and is followed by Coast Guard (364), WPI (298.5), Babson (279), Wheaton (234), Springfield (215) and Clark (126).
Tonight's meet began with the 200-free relay as
Dawson Milligan (Forestdale, Mass.),
Dan Backlund (Duxbury, Mass.),
Matt Quinney (Belchertown, Mass.) and
Viet-Anh Nguyen (East Longmeadow, Mass.)combined for a time of 1:24.21 to finish sixth in the championship final. The quartet of
Kellen Maher (Naugatuck, Conn.),
Jason Kim (Shelton, Conn.),
Zavier Villanueva (Wilbraham, Mass.) and
Spencer Studley (Meriden, Conn.) took 13th in the "B" final with a time of 1:27.38.
Quinney individually went on to finish fifth overall in the 200-IM with a time of 1:51.38 – just 0.22-seconds shy of the school record, while Backlund took sixth in the 50-free in 20.81.
Nick Hall (West Hartford, Conn.) also competed in the consolation finals of the 200-IM as he clocked a time of 4:43.24 for 12th overall.
The night concluded with a 13th place finish by the 400-medley relay "B" squad of
Charles Deaton (Bluffton, S.C.), Studley, Villanueva and Maher as they clocked a 3:32.52. The "A" squad had produced a school record time in the final heat, but was ultimately DQ'd following the event.
Springfield will return to the pool tomorrow at 10:00 am for prelims on day three of the NEWMAC Championships. Tomorrow's events include the 400-IM, 100-fly, 200-free, 100-breast, 100-back, 200-medley relay and the 1-meter dive.
