Cambridge, Mass. – February 21, 2026 – The third day of the 2026 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships for the Springfield College men's swimming and diving team was highlighted by podium finishes by both
Christian Butler (North Haven, Conn.) and
Matt Quinney (Belchertown, Mass.).
Through three days in the pool, Springfield sits in sixth place with 339 points. MIT leads with 1066.5 points, Coast Guard is second with 670 points, WPI is third with 524.5 points, Babson is fourth with 506 points, Wheaton is fifth with 419 points and Clark is seventh with 169 points.
Quinney registered a school record time of 54.58 in the 100-breast and took home NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team accolades with a silver medal in the event. Quinney's swim this morning originally broke the record, which sat at 55.27 set by
Matthew Kenvin a season ago. Quinney also achieved an NCAA B Cut tonight putting him in the top-20 nationally with hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
Meanwhile in the diving well, Butler completed the two-event gold medal sweep tonight as he won the 1-meter board with a score of 510.65. In six attempts at the NEWMAC Championships, Butler has five gold medals, one silver medal and is the two-time defending NEWMAC Men's Diver of the Year. The 2026 Diver of the Year will be revealed following tomorrow's final session.
Springfield took three of the top five places in diving tonight led by Butler's 510.65.
Tyler Khongkham (East Hampton, Mass.) took bronze with a score of 432.20, while
Andrew Testa (North Attleboro, Mass.) finished fifth with a mark of 411.25. Both Butler and Khongkham registered scores above the 425.00 NCAA regional qualifying score.
Dawson Milligan (Forestdale, Mass.) produced a pair of tenth place finishes for the Pride in his individual swims tonight as he clocked a 51.31 in the 100-back and 51.11 in the 100-fly. Behind Milligan in the 100-fly was
Dan Backlund (Duxbury, Mass.) in 52.05.
Charles Deaton (Bluffton, S.C.) returned to the pool for the consolation finals of the 200-free and finished 20th with a time of 1:45.79, while the "B" 200-medley relay of
Alex Olson (Phillipston, Mass.),
Spencer Studley (Meriden, Conn.),
Matthew Wilkosz (Whitesboro, N.Y.) and
Jason Kim (Shelton, Conn.) posted a time of 1:40.08 for 16th in the final event of the night.
Springfield will return to the pool tomorrow at 10:00 am for the final day of the NEWMAC Championships. All events will be swam as timed finals due to the impending snow storm. Events scheduled include the 200-back, 100-free, 200-breast, 200-fly, 1650-free and 400-free relay.
