Men's Lacrosse Surges Past Coast Guard, 13-9

Box Score

New London, Conn. - April 20, 2016 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team strung together a 9-1 run over an 18:40 span to propel themselves to a 13-9 win at Coast Guard in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.

The Pride is now 6-7 on the year, including a 4-0 mark in league play.

Kevin Dean (Westhampton, N.Y.) continued his standout play with four goals and an assist to lead all players, while Dylan Sheehan (Massapequa, N.Y.) posted two goals and two assists.  Tony LaGuerre (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) handed out three assists to go along with a goal, and Tom Hurley (Goffstown, N.H.) recorded two goals and a helper.

The Pride dominated the face-off "X", going 19-for-26 behind the play of Tyler Heckmann (Brookfield, Conn.) and Matthew LaCroix (Westfield, Mass.).  Jake Reynolds (Scituate, Mass.) made seven saves between the pipes to chalk up the win.

Springfield earned a quick 3-0 lead just over four minutes into the game thanks to a pair of goals by Dean, and would take a 4-1 advantage at the 7:06 mark of the first when LaGuerre connected with Sheehan.

However, the hosts responded with three goals in a 2:48 span to even the game at 4-4 with 17 ticks left in the first.  Just 11 seconds later, Dom Abate (Beverly, Mass.) found the back of the cage to give Springfield a lead it would not relinquish.

The visitors scored the only four markers of the second quarter as Abate, Hurley, Dean, and Sheehan all netted goals for the Pride to give it a 9-4 cushion at the half.

After Coast Guard scored the first goal of the second half, the Pride strung together a 4-0 burst over the final eight minutes to take a commanding 13-5 lead.  Springfield once again benefited from a balanced attack, using goals from LaGuerre, Dean, Ty Daugstrup (Rocky River, Ohio) and Duncan Preston (South Portland, Maine).

The Bears scored four goals in the final quarter, including a man-up strike, but Springfield was able to hang on for another key NEWMAC win.

Springfield will play again on Saturday when it hosts Wheaton at 1 pm on Stagg Field.
