Box Score Amherst, Mass. - March 9, 2020 - The Springfield College softball team posted a 5-2 comeback victory over Amherst College on Monday evening at Amherst Softball Field.
Springfield starts the 2020 season with a 1-0 record as Amherst drops to 0-1.
Gillian Kane (New Caanan, Conn.) took the circle for the Pride, tossing all seven innings and only giving up two runs with two strikeouts. Offensively, Alexyss Conley (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) led Springfield going 2-for-4 with a homer and a triple. Emily Woznick (Sandy Hook, Conn.) contributed a pair of hits that brought in two runs. Three other players contributed a hit in the win.
For the Mammoths, Talia Bloxham started and pitched four innings, retiring four hitters while Danica Peterson came in for the final three innings and gave up five runs.
Amherst crossed home first as Megan Taketa reached on an error, which scored Audrey Hasen in the bottom of the third, then, the Mammoths scored again in the bottom of the fourth with a bunt by Andrea Sanders that scored Scout Boynton. A sacrifice fly in the fifth from Meghan Sastram (Oxford, Conn.) would score Conley to get the Pride on the board making the score 2-1.
Heading into the seventh inning Springfield trailed 2-1. After a Jen Slane (Tolland, Conn.) walk, Conley would come to the plate with one out and homer a shot to left to give Springfield a lift, making the score 3-2. Following the homer, Sastram was walked, then, Abbi Conley (Plymouth, Mass.) came in to pinch hit and reached first on an error at third,. A wild pitch during the next at bat advanced both Sastram and Conley then Woznick cranked a single up the middle to score both, and give the Pride a 5-2 lead. In the bottom of the frame, Kane forced Amherst into three-straight outs to secure the win.
