Coast Guard Bests Men's Lacrosse, 13-9

New London, Conn. - April 23, 2022 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team was edged by a 13-9 decision at Coast Guard in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. The Bears are now 10-6 overall and 4-1 in the NEWMAC, while Springfield drops to 6-8 on the season and 3-2 in conference play. 

Dan Lucas made a career-high and CGA record, 18 saves and Caleb Holdridge had six points.  Ian Feely and Gaige Kruger each had three goals, and Dan Zarillo, Gunnar Brodfuehrer, and Ryan Flynn all added one goal in the win for the Bears.

Zac Schuette (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) led Springfield with five goals and one assist. Gavin Carzello (Westfield, Mass.) put two away for the Pride, and Chris Santa Barbara (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Riley Burgmyer (Somers, N.Y.) both added a goal each for Springfield.   Dean Pesce (Monroe, N.Y.) had 15 saves for the Pride , as Coast Guard was 16 of 24 for faceoffs, but Springfield held a 49-39 advantage in shots.

Feely and Brodfuehrer scored back-to-back goals to open the game and give Coast Guard a quick 2-0 lead. Springfield got on the board at 2:05 in the first, making it 2-1. Holdridge put away his first of the game at 1:57 to give the Bears a 3-1 lead.

Carzello scored the opening goal of the second at 12:34. Kruger answered for the Bears at 8:16, extending the Bears' lead to 4-2. Santa Barbara scored for Springfield at 5:14, sparking a three-goal run for the Pride as they took a 5-4 lead to end the half following a strike by Burgmyer with 4:13 remaining in the frame.

Feely tied it back up 6-6 with his second of the game, followed by a Holdridge goal at 14:21 as the Bears took a 6-5 lead. The Pride tied it once more at 12:27, but Holdridge and Zarillo scored back-to-back goals to take the lead, 8-6. Burgmyer scored the final goal of the third period as the Pride trailed 8-7.

Feely opened the final period with a goal at 14:20, sparking a three-goal run as the Bears extended their lead, 11-7. Schuette scored two more for the Pride, and Kruger scored two more for the Bears for the 13-9 final.

The Pride is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Clark at 1 pm.
