Box Score Babson Park, Mass. - May 6, 2022 - The Springfield College softball team had its 2022 campaign come to a close on Friday afternoon as it was edged by MIT, 3-2, in the second day of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Tournament at Babson College.
Springfield concluded the year with a 26-14 record. Mackenzie Doyle (Gloucester, R.I.) had two of the Pride's four hits in the game and scored a run as she finished the year with 65 hits, the third-highest single-season total in program history. Emily Gell (Trumbull, Conn.) was charged the loss as she went 4.2 innings, scattering six hits and allowing three runs, one of which was earned.
MIT struck in the first inning as Kennedy Adkison reached on a Springfield error to lead off the game and then stole second to get into scoring position. Anya Chase followed with a double to left center to plate the first run of the contest. The Engineers added two more runs in the second, once again benefitting from a Springfield error to lead of the frame, before Katia Pendowski and Chase each ripped run-scoring base knocks to make it a 3-0 contest.
In the third, the Pride's Katie Leacoma (Walpole, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and Doyle singled to right to put a pair of runners on. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, Sam Witmer (Drexel Hill, Pa.) turned in a sacrifice fly to plate Leacoma and Ava Fernandez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) delivered a single down the left field line to score Doyle and make it a one-run game.
Doyle was later stranded on third in the fifth for what would be the Pride's final threat of the afternoon as MIT would hold on for the one-run win.
