Softball Escapes With Two NEWMAC Wins at Smith

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Northampton, Mass.  – April 14, 2023 – The Springfield College softball team escaped with two New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) wins at Smith College this afternoon to up its winning streak to 16 as Springfield took the opener 6-4 and the nightcap 5-4 (5 Inn.) before it was called due to darkness.

The Pride, who now have sole possession of first place in the conference, sit at 25-3 on the year and 8-0 in the NEWMAC, while Smith dropped to 8-14 overall and 1-5 in league play.

Game One:

Springfield trailed 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning and with runners on second and third after a sacrifice bunt, Maggie Britt (Bridgeport, Conn.) drove in Lucy Puskas (Roxbury, Conn.) and Breannah McCann (San Diego, Calif.) for a 3-2 edge.

The Pride upped their advantage to two in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Callie Gendron (Berlin, Conn.) and to four in the sixth on an RBI double by Carissa Pecchia (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) and an RBI single by McCann.

Emily Gell (Trumbull, Conn.) entered the game in the bottom of the sixth and retired the side maintaining Springfield's 6-2 lead. An error and a single put two runners on in the seventh before starter Gillian Kane (New Canaan, Conn.) returned to the circle for the Pride. Two runners crossed home, but Kane (9-1) got the final two batters including Kaitlen Beals on a swinging strikeout securing the win for Springfield.

Kane earned the win in six innings as she scattered six hits, allowed two earned runs and struck out four.

Game Two:

In game two, the score was knotted at four heading into the fifth inning when Dana Serricchio (Stamford, Conn.) roped an RBI double to left field to give Springfield a lead it would not relinquish. Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.), who pitched the five inning complete game, allowed the winning run to reach first, but got out of the jam with a ground out to secure the sweep for Springfield.

Kristen Acocella (Redding, Conn.) recorded Springfield's first RBI of game two as she doubled to center to plate Pecchia for the 1-0 edge. Smith went ahead 2-1 before the frame was over, but in the fourth DeRosa cleared the bases and put the Pride ahead 4-2 with a double off the fence in center.

Smith answered once again in the bottom of the second with a two run single and the game remained even until Serricchio's at-bat in the fifth.

DeRosa improved to 6-1 in the circle for Springfield with a complete game effort as she tallied four strikeouts on the day.

Springfield will welcome No. 25 MIT to Potter Field tomorrow afternoon for a crucial NEWMAC twinbill at 12:00 pm.
