Box Score Springfield, Mass. – April 22, 2023 – The Springfield College men's lacrosse team rolled to a 17-3 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over Coast Guard this afternoon on Stagg Field.
The Pride, now 5-9 overall and 4-1 in NEWMAC play, secured a berth in the 2023 NEWMAC Tournament and will close the regular season next Saturday, April 29 at Clark University. Springfield can secure the second-seed in the tournament with a win over Clark and a Babson win over MIT next Saturday.
Alek Turi (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Mason Nocito (Mahopac, N.Y.) both registered five goals for Springfield, while Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) chipped in with a hat trick for the Pride offensively today. Defensively, Connor Roberts (Somers, Conn.) tallied five ground balls and four caused turnovers in the win.
Springfield scored the first eight goals of the game as the run was capped with a man-up goal by Tierney late in the second quarter that completed his fourth hat trick of the season. All four of Tierney's hat tricks have come in NEWMAC play as he also accomplished the feat against MIT (March 25), Babson (April 1), Emerson (April 8) and Coast Guard (April 22).
Ian Feely scored Coast Guard's first goal of the game with 30 seconds to play in the first half. Springfield, outscored the Bears by a 9-2 margin in the second half en route to the 17-3 win. Turi posted three second half goals, while Nicholas Savastano (South Salem, N.Y.) registered a power play goal late in the fourth.
Statistically, Springfield led in shots (57-25) and ground balls (38-22). The Pride won 18-of-24 face-offs, 15 of which were claimed by Steven Betsch (Port Washington, N.Y.) and were a perfect 23-for-23 in clearing attempts. Springfield also scored on four of its five chances on the man-advantage this afternoon.
In net, Dean Pesce (Monroe, N.Y.) made 12 saves on 15 shots in almost 52 minutes of play for the Pride as he improved to 4-5 on the year.
