Springfield Storms Past Clark in NEWMAC Twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Springfield, Mass. – April 7, 2023 – The Springfield College softball team combined for 29 runs and 31 hits in a two-game sweep of Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Friday afternoon on Diane L. Potter Field.

Springfield won game one 18-1 and the nightcap by an 11-2 final, both in five innings, to extend its winning streak to ten and to improve to 19-3 overall (4-0 NEWMAC). Clark dropped to 4-17 on the year and to 0-4 in conference play.

Game One:

The Pride registered 18 runs in the opener, the most runs scored in a single game for Springfield College in almost ten years to date. The last time Springfield produced 18 runs was on April 14, 2013 against Smith College, an 18-0 victory in five innings.

In the opener, Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs, while Carissa Pecchia (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) went 3-for-3 with three RBI and scored three times. Four others tallied two hits apiece including Mackenzie Doyle (Glocester R.I.), Michaela Ponticello (Gloversville, N.Y.), Breannah McCann (San Diego, Calif.) and Maggie Britt (Bridgeport, Conn.).

Springfield used four triples, a double and a pair of singles in the bottom of the first to account for its nine-run outbreak. Ponticello and Gillian Kane (New Canaan, Conn.) began the rally with back-to-back triples and the Pride proceeded to knock five run-scoring hits in a row before Clark escaped the inning.

The hosts loaded the bases to start the second before scoring six in the frame to balloon the score to 15-0. A two-run single to center by McCann and an RBI single to left by Kate Katsetos (Brewster, N.Y.) accounted for the remainder of Springfield's runs in game one.

First-year Logann Carey (Riverhead, N.Y.) picked up her first collegiate win out of the pen as she tossed three inning, scattered three hits and allowed one earned run.

Game Two:

The bats didn't slow down in the nightcap as Springfield scored in each of its four offensive innings. The Pride took advantage of two Clark errors in the first, tallied a trio of runs and never looked back. Doyle went 3-for-3 with an RBI at the top of the lineup, while Dana Serricchio (Stamford, Conn.) drove in four and scored twice from the eight spot.

Serrichio's day was spotlighted by an RBI triple in the bottom of the second and a two-run single in the bottom of the third. With runners on the corners, the senior knocked the ball to shortstop and plated Lucy Puskas (Roxbury, Conn.) for Springfield's 11th run of the game.

Ashley Pugliese (Huntington Station, N.Y.) held Clark hitless through three complete innings and earned the win (6-0) as she tossed four frames, scattered three hits and allowed a pair of runs.

Springfield will travel to Wellesley College for another NEWMAC doubleheader tomorrow afternoon beginning at 12:00 pm.
