Box Score 2 Wellesley, Mass. – April 8, 2023 – Springfield softball picked up a pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) wins at Wellesley College. The pride won the opener 5-3 and the nightcap, 6-2.
With the two wins, Springfield improved to 21-3 overall and to 6-0 in NEWMAC play, while Wellesley dropped to 2-13-1 on the year and to 0-4 in the league. Springfield earned its 20th win of the season today, marking the 13th time since 2008 that the Pride have reached that plateau.
First-year Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.) finished the doubleheader with a 6-for-8 effort at the plate, scored three runs and drove in three, while leadoff hitter Mackenzie Doyle (Glocester, R.I.) went 5-for-8 and scored four times.
Game One:
Springfield scored twice in the first inning on RBI singles from both Carissa Pecchia (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) and Callie Gendron (Berlin, Conn.). An RBI double by DeRosa made the score 3-1 in favor of the Pride through two.
Wellesley got a pair of runs back and knotted the game at three in the bottom of the fourth on a two run triple by Ingrid Hsu.
The score remained tied at 3-3 until the top of the sixth when Alli Olsen (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored what proved to be the game winning run on an error by the hosts before Dana Serricchio (Stamford, Conn.) stole home for a 5-3 edge. Emily Gell (Trumbull, Conn.) came out of the pen for Springfield and shutdown Wellesley for three innings to earn the win in relief.
DeRosa got the start and lasted four innings, before Gell (2-1) pitched three near perfect frames to secure the victory. Gell, who faced ten batters, struck out three and allowed just one hit in three innings of work.
Game Two:
Springfield took an early 5-0 lead in the nightcap and never looked back en route to the sweep. Doyle scored Springfield's first run on an error as DeRosa stole second base. In the second, a two run single by DeRosa paired with RBI knocks by Kristen Acocella (Redding, Conn.) and Michaela Ponticello (Gloversville, N.Y.) pushed the Pride's lead to five.
Wellesley got two back in third, but those were the lone runs Springfield starter Gillian Kane (New Canaan, Conn.) allowed to the hosts as she improved to 7-1 in the circle. Pecchia added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a single through the left side for the 6-2 final.
Ashley Pugliese (Huntington Station, N.Y.) pitched the final two innings for Springfield and was near perfect as she scatted two hits and punched out a pair.
Springfield will travel to Amherst College for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 12 beginning at 3:00 pm.
