- Made his mark as an excellent coach in football and wrestling on the high school level in Schenectady, N.Y.
- Has been inducted into five Athletic Halls of Fame, including the Schenectady High School's Hall of Fame first induction in 1995
- Also a member of the Section II Wrestling Hall of Fame, and N.Y. State Wresting Coaches Hall of Fame
- In 2007, he was named to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame
- The football field at Schenectady High School has been named "Larry Mulvaney Field" in his honor
- From 1952 to 1967, he led Mont Pleasant High School's football teams to a 107-64-4 record; his 1967 squad achieved a No. 1 in the state ranking
- At the same time, his wrestling teams posted an overall record of 209-58-6; his squads won three Section II Championships, while he had 41 Section II Championships, nine N.Y. State place-finishers, and two N.Y. State Champions
- Coached the youth program for Schenectady's Parks and Recreation Department for 25 years; started Pop Warner Football in Schenectady, serving as that league's first commissioner
- At Springfield College, he was a three-year starting offensive tackle in football, and a starting heavyweight as a wrestlerÂ
