- Named Master Coach in 1971 and Distinguished Coach in 1973 by the NCAA
- District Two Coach of the Year and runner-up for national coach-of-the-year honors in 1973
- Won ACC Coach-of the Year- Award several times
- Named Outstanding Teacher at the University of Maryland and received the award for "Excellence in Teaching" (1975)
- Member of the United States Olympic Swimming Committee (1972)
- Coached the Singapore and Malaya Olympic Swim Team for the 1960 Rome Olympics
- Inducted into the University of Maryland Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989 and into the Pennsylvania Swimming Hall of Fame in 1993
- Received the Richard Steadman Award from the College Swimming Coaches Association for outstanding coaching record, contribution to water safety, and helping spread the joy of swimming
- Won a gold medal in the 100yd freestyle curing the 1987 US Senior Olympics
- Numerous gold medals at the National YMCA Masters Championships
- 6th place in the 50 and 100 in two different World Games
