- Freshman Coach of Swimming and Diving at Springfield College (1949-54)

- Head Coach of Swimming and Diving and Director of Aquatics at the Virginia Military Institute (1954-55) and at the University of Maryland (1955-75)

- Overall record at Maryland was 225-55 in dual meets with 19 winning seasons out of 20 

- Coached 42 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) individual champions and seven ACC team champions

- Named Master Coach in 1971 and Distinguished Coach in 1973 by the NCAA

- District Two Coach of the Year and runner-up for national coach-of-the-year honors in 1973

- Won ACC Coach-of the Year- Award several times

- Named Outstanding Teacher at the University of Maryland and received the award for "Excellence in Teaching" (1975)

- Member of the United States Olympic Swimming Committee (1972)

- Coached the Singapore and Malaya Olympic Swim Team for the 1960 Rome Olympics

- Inducted into the University of Maryland Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989 and into the Pennsylvania Swimming Hall of Fame in 1993

- Received the Richard Steadman Award from the College Swimming Coaches Association for outstanding coaching record, contribution to water safety, and helping spread the joy of swimming

- Won a gold medal in the 100yd freestyle curing the 1987 US Senior Olympics

- Numerous gold medals at the National YMCA Masters Championships

- 6th place in the 50 and 100 in two different World Games
