- Member of Springfield College's back-to-back National and New England Championships in men's soccer in 1946 and 1947
- As a senior in 1947, he was the team's captain, MVP, and leading scorer
- Taught physical education and special education in West Springfield for over 29 years, while serving as a coach for soccer, hockey, and golf teams
- Became a nationally-prominent figure in soccer for his coaching, refereeing, and administrative work
- Co-founder and president of the Pioneer Valley Soccer League and the Pioneer Valley Soccer Officials Association
- The top division of the Pioneer Valley Soccer League is known as thee "Smith Division" in Ted's name
- Smith later became the first coach to represent the United States in the Portland Cultural Exchange American Soccer Program
